Thai PBS brings Children’s Drama 'Smart Boy' to Taiwanese Classrooms

Thai PBS and Taiwan’s Public Television Service Foundation (PTS) have officially signed a cooperation agreement to support the exchange of media content for children and youth, bringing the Thai short drama 'Smart Boy' to schools and other educational institutions across Taiwan for the next three years.

Mr. Vanchai Tantivitayapitak, Director-General of the Thai Public Broadcasting Service (Thai PBS), stated that, on May 1st, 2026, Thai PBS signed a Children’s Program License Agreement with the Public Television Service Foundation (PTS), Taiwan’s national public broadcaster. The agreement aims to provide creative children’s content for public screenings in Taiwanese educational institutions through public media collaboration.

The partnership reflects a shared commitment to using public media as a tool for cross-cultural learning, mutual understanding and youth engagement. It also creates new opportunities for Thai children’s content to reach international audiences in educational and learning contexts.

Under the agreement, PTS acquires the rights to screen ‘Smart Boy,’ a short drama produced by Thai PBS through the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) content exchange network. The program will be used for non-commercial educational activities in schools and educational institutions throughout Taiwan from May 1st, 2026, to April 30th, 2029.

“This collaboration marks another important milestone for Thai PBS in taking Thai-produced child and youth content onto the international stage through the power of public media networks. It reflects the role of public broadcasting in leveraging content for learning and cultural understanding between societies.” said Mr. Vanchai.

'Smart Boy' is one of Thai PBS’s internationally recognised children’s television productions. In 2019, the drama was broadcast in Japan on NHK ETV, NHK’s educational television channel for children and youth. The program was also selected for screening at the Taiwan International Children’s Film Festival (TICFF).

The short drama follows Kengkla, a 9-year-old boy living with his father, an electronics repairman. Although intelligent, kind-hearted and aspiring to become Prime Minister one day, Kengkla faces a difficult lesson after secretly borrowing and damaging his best friend’s Game Boy. Through the incident, he learns about responsibility, honesty and problem-solving. The story reflects friendship, personal growth and meaningful life lessons through a contemporary yet relatable perspective for young audiences.

The continued international recognition of 'Smart Boy' highlights the growing potential of Thai-produced creative content on global educational and cultural platforms, while reinforcing Thai PBS’s role as a public service broadcaster committed to meaningful learning for children and youth worldwide.
