Thai PBS - Great content easily accessible across all platforms
Imagine a society that is completely devoid of trust. A society in which information is distorted, where people communicate with each other with prejudiced, distorted and sensationalised information that provokes conflict, and a society in which people cannot talk or discuss rationally. Communication, dominated by the use of influence, is used only to benefit a particular group of people. As the voice of the minority is suppressed by the unjust social structure, the environment is being destroyed, without anyone to reprimand or being held accountable.
In such a world, inequality grows without limit, hate is emphasized, as values and dignity are trampled upon.
Even though there are various social institutions with the power to ease the people’s suffering, if the public cannot access a trustworthy information source, when a social mechanism for constructive discussion doesn't exist, without adequate citizen empowerment for people to believe in their own power to change the society and no verification mechanisms to ensure that power is exercised in a legitimate and just manner..., society will be full of people lacking justice and with no peace.
These are the reasons for having ‘public service media’ and are the origins of the Thai Public Broadcasting Service, which is also known as "Thai PBS".
In the heyday of social media, broadcasting and internet streaming, with access through various online platforms, the country has become dominated by the local media and marketing competition.
To survive, it has become a new mantra in media management that it must be ‘Quick, sensational, with high ratings’
The spirit of journalism is being challenged by changing consumption behaviors like never before.
Thai PBS is highly regarded for upholding the following principles;
- A guarantee of credibility that still commits to presenting the facts, comprehensively, transparently and free from bias in an ocean of information contaminated with false news, misinformation, disinformation and hidden agenda.
- An open space for the silenced voices, whether it's the problems of farmers or workers, local communities, or vulnerable groups that are often ignored by mainstream media.
- Bridging the understanding gap in a society full of conflict and controversy, Thai PBS focuses on developing a solution-based conversation that respects diversity and mutual differences, leading to solutions by prioritising thought-provoking content.
- Public media for the public good: While the commercial media need to be driven by ratings and advertising revenue, and the government-directed media need to abide by the government's policies, the role of Thai PBS is focused on being a public service media outlet that prioritises the people’s interests and promotes the role of the civic sector in fostering a democratic society.
Having strong public service media is an important solution. Thai PBS is committed to keeping pace with technological changes, while preserving its spirit as public service media that truly promotes understanding and provides hope to Thai society, with the conviction that ‘communication’ is just, independent and free from prejudice, is the basis on which to create a society where everyone can live together peacefully. It is an important tool in leading Thai society through various challenges and together moving towards new possibilities for a better future for everyone.
